Re: Carolina Skiff - Choppy Water? Very helpful advice! 2 yrs ago off grand isle LA, a skiff took a wave over transom returning to shore (1 mi) in relatively calm seas, flooded boat, listed to side, foundered, 1 person drown, 1 survive. Unlike other skiffs that may get their crew to feel seasick in rough water, the passengers of the S4 ride a saddle seat much like the saddles of big personal watercraft (PWC – “jet-ski”), all terrain vehicles (ATV), and dirt bikes. wet wet wet wet wet wet wet wet. Storage, ride, safe, build quality, resale value... all top notch. In terms of agility and speed, they are firmly situated between displacement and planing hulls. The only disadvantages are it's not the best poling skiff… 2 kids, (maybe the wife too) and rough water. Also, not a rough water boat at all. The Solo Skiff is an all one piece seamless motorized fishing kayak. Two additional things I was taught many years ago for rowing in rough water and wind: feathering the blades of the oars to “slice” through the air and water and using a “Fisherman’s Row,” i.e., one oar at a time, to keep one blade in the water at all times. They can make excellent rough-water boats if properly designed, with much of the solidity and comfort of the displacement hull but also a good run of speed, often into the high 20- or low 30-knot range. Rotational molded in high density polyethylene, with two layers for a hull thickness of over 1/2″, the Solo Skiff is built like a tank. It may not be the tool for every job but it definitely is for that job. These vehicles allow their users for the most effective balancing possible, so they don’t feel seasick.
